15 May 2002, Last week the CCC circulated a
request to take action on the case of Tainan in El Salvador,
which produces for the Gap and Dress Barn (U.S. retailers).
It appears that there is a European connection with Tainan Enterprises,
which owns the Tainan factory in El Salvador. Tainan Enterprises
owns the POIS label, along with Tony Wear and MCase. While these
are sold mainly in Asia, POIS does have stores throughout Italy
and a few in Austria and Spain. Find below some information
on location and contact information. This information was collected
by the AFL-CIO Solidarity Center and forwarded to us by US/LEAP.
US/LEAP also reported the following activities taking place
in relation to this case:
"Delegations of local activists are going to the Tainan
Enterprises customers headquarters and to Taiwanese governmental
offices across the States. Also, it seems that the union in
El Salvador, STIT, has a letter with 56 organizational signatures
from El Salvador and the U.S. that they are sending to the Gap
and the other Tainan Enterprises customers.
Most importantly, reports from El Salvador are that the network
of union folks is still strong, despite the factory closure,
and that people are sticking it out, wanting to go back to work.
