"Systematic Exploitation" in Indian Garment Hub
A new report by the UK-based organisations Labour Behind the Label and War on Want details the extremely poor working conditions in Gurgaon, India, one of the main centers of garments production in Asia. Labour Behind the Label is name of the British CCC.
The report, entitled "Taking Liberties, the Story behind the UK High Street", reveals that garment workers in Gurgaon face poverty wages, short-term contracts, systematic exclusion from social security benefits, repression of trade union organising and problems in accessing state provision of basic services. In other words, workers have the most basic of social and economic liberties taken from them.
Our researchers found that workers speak of a climate of fear and insecurity, where their everyday choices are limited by the contractors, factory owners, landlords, and authorities who control all aspects of their lives.
