What Should Companies Do to Improve Respect for Workers’ Rights?

Successful campaigning by the CCC and workers’ rights advocates across the globe has led many businesses to adopt “codes of conduct,” a list of standards for suppliers.

The CCC pushes companies to give these codes real meaning by reinforcing them with a commitment to monitoring conditions, resolving problems, and engaging in business practices that enable suppliers to provide decent work for a living wage.

The CCC’s  Full Package Approach to Labour Codes of Conduct offers concrete steps companies can take to ensure that their products are made under humane conditions:

  • Step1: Adopt a comprehensive, credible and transparent code of conduct based on the International Labour Organisation Core Labour Rights Conventions and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  For more information, see the Clean Clothes Campaign’s Reference Guide on Code Implementation and Verification.
  • Step 2: Implement the code of conduct with provisions for monitoring, verification, remediation, ethical purchasing, sector-wide collaboration and gender awareness.
  • Step 3: Participate in a credible multi-stakeholder initiative that involves companies, unions, NGOs and, above all, factory workers in improving labour practices.
  • Step 4: Adopt a pro-active and positive approach towards freedom of association and good-faith collective bargaining.
