June 2003

New research into informal sector workers in the garment industry was released in Sri Lanka last month. Find the report "Women Working in the Informal Sector in Sri Lanka at:

The collaborative action research by TIE-Asia and Working Women Worldwide (WWW), UK, was launched on May 8th at the Hotel Renuka, Colombo before a gathering of about 45 guests and media.

The research which reveals valuable information about a hidden, yet vital component of the export orientated garment industry, was a joint project coordinated by TIE-Asia and involved several other organisations including the Women's Centre, DaBindu Collective and the Centre for the Welfare of Garment Workers.

At the launch, the English version of the research report was presented to a group of informal sector garment workers. Sinhala and Tamil language versions of the report will also be available. Summaries of the report in all three languages are available now.
