Beware of Mickey

NEWSLETTER 14, JULY 2001

Beware of Mickey

From March to November 2000, the Hong Kong Christian Industrial Committee (CIC) investigated working conditions at 12 Disney contract factories in Guangdong province in southern China. Six were toy factories, two garment, three accessory, and one watch factory. Some are regular suppliers to Disney, and some are seasonal suppliers. All were producing for Disney during the investigation period. Most of the products manufactured in the factories were for export to North America and Europe. The CIC interviewed five to 15 workers from each factory. The vast majority of workers in the 12 factories were young, single, female, migrant workers from rural areas in inland provinces. Most were between the ages of 18 and 30, though some are as young as 16.

The summary of the CIC's findings and the entire report can be found here.

Made in China

Another interesting resource on working conditions in China is " Made in China : The Role of U.S. companies in Denying Human and Worker Rights," the May 2000 report from the National Labor Committee (NLC) in the United States, available from the NLC (275 7th Avenue, New York, NY 10001) or on their website: http://www.nlcnet.org. Includes information about working conditions at factories producing for brands such as Nike, Timberland, New Balance, Keds, Wal Mart, Huffy, and Spiegel, as well as information on labor activists imprisoned in China.
