This report from the Spanish campaign Campaña
Ropa Limpia provides an update of the many activities organized since the Spring.
It shows how the campaign has been able to use existing events and festivals in
different regions of Spain as an opportunity to get out on the street and speak
directly to consumers.
New
report launched
May Day was used to launch a new report "La moda,
un tejido de injusticias" (Fashion, a fabric of injustice) on the working
conditions in the Moroccan factories of some Spanish companies (an article based
on this report can be found on the previous 2 pages).
The power of the
internet
A new, more dynamic and interactive web page was also launched
together with the cyber campaign "Just Stop It" which aims to raise
awareness of the working conditions in Nike factories. Seven human rights groups
from around the world participated, involving more than 12,000 activists. In Catalonia
alone, 9000 protest letters were sent. Without a doubt, the most successful activities
are the urgent appeals on workers' rights that are spread via the internet. The
campaigners also use the information to spread the word about working conditions
in actions on the street or in places of work or study. Some of these campaigns
are already bringing us results.
Barcelona
In July, several
CCC volunteers gave out information about the "Just Stop It" campaign
in front of the new exclusive Nike store in Barcelona. If you want to see the
photos or even a video about the events in Barcelona, Pamplona and Valencia, visit
www.ropalimpia.org. El
Casal de las hormigas (the house of the ants), a pedagogic association, joined
the CCC during the preparation for the campaign "Camiseta de papel (paper
t-shirt)" which raises awareness among primary and secondary school students
about the working conditions in which our clothes are produced. 3572 t-shirts
were produced and customized by the children with direct messages to textile and
garment companies denouncing the lack of respect for workers rights and asking
for change. Every week one of these t-shirts was published in the local press.
Action
"Otro Globo es Posible" (Another Globe is Possible)
This was
organized by 23 organizations from Vitoria-Gasteiz in June. The CCC were involved
with the human rights stand. Visitors were invited to join the campaign and were
given information about corporate responsibility and transparency. All this was
carried out using lively activities like street theatre, puppets, concerts, graffiti
In the closing activity a manifesto was read and balloons were released. This
July a weekly radio program (15 minutes long) was started to give information
about the CCC, the objectives, activities and our publication "Fashion: a
fabric of injustice".
Valencia
Campaigners took advantage
of the sales in July and organized a new street action to reach more consumers.
They placed a stand in Los Pinazo Square, in front of the department store "El
Corte Inglés", and distributed over 500 letters. People were very
interested and they tried to hand the letter in at the sports section of "El
Corte Inglés", although the shop assistants refused to accept the
letters. Extremadura` This work focused on one of the brands brought into the
spotlight in the Morocco report, the children's clothing brand, Mayoral. A notice
board was displayed in a shopping centre with correspondence between Mayoral,
the CCC and consumers which showed the contradictions in Mayoral's behaviour.
Aragon
The
documentaries "Trapos Sucios" (Dirty Clothes) and "Consumo Responsible"
(Responsible Consumption) were screened and a debate on the role of consumers
took place. Several associations have joined together to create the "Red
Universitaria de Comercio Justo" (University Network of Fair Trade), which
aims to raise the profile of the CCC among the university community. The exhibition
"Tejido con Dignidad" (Fabric with Dignity) will tour around different
universities.
Galicia
During the first week of April, the third
"Semana de Comercio Xusto" (Fair Trade Week) was held by the NGO Amarante,
one of the most active associations inside the CCC network. This provided opportunities
to raise awareness of CCC activities alongside concerts and exhibitions run by
students of the Fine Arts Faculty.
Toledo
Here the CCC was
promoted in several education institutions during Solidarity Week in February.
As did one of the radio shows at the University of Leon. The work was also highlighted
in Granada at the "Jornadas de Medio Ambiente (Conference on the Environment)".
