NEWSLETTER 17, December 2003 What
are CCC urgent appeals? |
A CCC urgent appeal is a request for people to take action against a garment
or sports shoe manufacturer on a specific case of labor rights violations. The
urgent appeals system is one way that the CCC works to support workers in their
struggle to improve working conditions and to forge international solidarity links
with labor rights organizations. The CCC frequently receives appeals from workers
producing garments for multinationals. The CCC urgent appeals Working Group
(made up of representatives from all the different European Clean Clothes Campaigns),
using specific criteria takes up these requests, verifies them, and adds to the
initial information about the case using our local contacts in the country where
the rights violation has occurred. If the workers involved decide that a public,
international campaign is what they really want, then a wide appeal for action
is distributed to the CCC international network via e-mail. This e-mail network
now has approximately 350 members. Individual CCCs and the other organizations
on the list select the cases they will follow up on. For more information on how
to request international support via an urgent appeal, see www.cleanclothes.org/urgent/intro.htm.
The editorial of this issue elaborates on urgent appeals, puts the successes
reported below in a wider perspective, and announces the impact study that the
CCC will next year commission to try and improve its direct solidarity actions
for workers in the worldwide garment industry. Please remember that all the information
presented in this issue dates from November/December 2003. For the current status
of these cases we refer to our website. For more information or to participate,
please contact the CCC in your area. |
