NEWSLETTER 13, NOVEMBER 2000
Editorial
|
This 13th edition of the Clean Clothes Campaign's international
newsletter presents news on what's been happening in Europe and
beyond in relation to the movement to improve working conditions
in the global garment industry.
Of special interest is a report from Thailand. A CCC researcher
traveled to Thailand and met with workers, NGO and trade union activists
to get the latest information on working conditions in Thai garment
factories. Another report comes from Indonesia, where U.S. living
wage activists interviewed workers on a variety of issues. Our feature,
an excerpt from a daily diary kept by the activists, focuses on
women's rights in the workplace, specifically on the issue of menstruation
leave.
The big event in the summer of 2000 was the European Football Championship,
and of course the CCC joined in with a Euro2000 campaign. Included
in this issue is a summary of the events that took place throughout
Europe in relation to this campaign. But just because the championships
are over that does not mean that the CCC's campaign to get sportswear
companies to live up to their responsibilities will slow down. To
keep up-to-date on the latest CCC actions in relation to the sportswear
industry, please visit the campaign's website at www.cleanclothes.org.
Enjoy this edition of the newsletter and please share it with others.
Extra copies are available upon request from the CCC office in Amsterdam
and the entire edition can be found on our website.
We hope that you'll not only read the articles inside, but that
you'll also take us up on our call for input during an important
period of evaluation and strategizing (see page INSERT PAGE NUMBER).
The CCC is 10 years old - we hope that our colleagues in the struggle
to improve working conditions throughout the world pause to take
pride in what's been accomplished thus far, and also join us in
planning for the future.
