Actions in Spain

|
Clean Clothes Campaign members were extremely active in Spain
last February. Here follows a brief summary of all the things done
ACTION ON THE STREETS
On Saturday, 12 February, we were out on the streets of Barcelona
to collect sportshoes for the last time since the beginning of the
action. In the end we collected a large pile. We also invited people
to make their own advertisements in support of better working conditions.
A simultaneous action took place in Madrid. We returned the trainers
on 16/17 February in Barcelona and Madrid respectively. The aim
of this symbolic action was the return of faulty shoes, i.e. made
without respect for workers' rights to two big companies (Nike and
adidas). Over 600 trainers were returned and a letter was sent to
the managers of both firms.
POSTCARDS DISTRIBUTION
More than 11,000 postcards have been sent to the management of
Nike and Adidas. Although both companies have reacted positively
to the social pressure, there is still much work to be done.
ANTI-NIKE ADVERTISEMENT
Clean Clothes Campaign members have created an adbuster spot (counter-advertisement)
imitating the style of Nike and Adidas advertising. The effect was
created by using the same kind of images the companies use in their
advertising campaigns of sportsmen and -women modelling their sportswear
and trainers. The aim of the ad is to get people to reflect upon
the following question: "Do you know how these trainers have
been made?" The 20-second spot is available to any media that
is interested. It is proffesionally shot and edited and has already
been broadcast.
MARINA RÍOS WAS IN BARCELONA
Marina Ríos, coordinator of women workers of MAM's maquilas
in El Salvador, has recently visited us and toured Spain, talking
about the living conditions of women working in the maquilas. Marina's
visit was highly useful to disseminate information about the reality
of these women.
Naked fashion
"La moda al desnudo" - a Spanish translation of "La
mode deshabillee" by Carole Crabbé has been launched
in Barcelona. The world of fashion in the South is analysed in-depth
in this book. The book tells, simply and clearly, about the unfair
working conditions in which garments are made. As consumers, we
have the social responsibility to demand information about the way
garments are made. We should be aware that we are powerful enough
to change the situation. Crabbé makes suggestions for possible
solutions, ranging from utopia to real possibility.
