NEWSLETTER 12, MAY 2000
Austria
|
The Austrian campaign is concentrating part of its education activities
around the Euro2000.
1) In the wake of the City Marathon we are offering educational
units for teachers as well as classes for students designed to communicate
Clean Clothes issues to the youth.
2) At the end of May or the beginning of June, we will be staging
public discussions in Vienna and Salzburg with eye-witnesses from
Latin America and Asia to present their apparel industry experiences
in labor and social rights to Austrian unionists as well as representatives
of the sportswear industry.
3) We are currently mobilising a few celebrities and as many consumers
as possible to participate in the marathon. By wearing special T-shirts
promoting the campaign goals, participants will draw the attention
of bypassers. Four information desks will be there, ready to communicate
campaign issues and provide additional information. At the finish
of the race we will stage a rally to jointly present our demands
to the public.
4) Leaflets and postcards, designed to accompany the various stages
of the marathon will be distributed to enable runners as well as
the audience to directly address their demand for Clean Clothes
to the sportswear industry.
The same concept will be applied to the Austrian Women's Race
on June 18.
In cooperation with the Clean Clothes Campaign, the prestigious
Austrian daily newspaper "Der Standard" is co-producing
an 8 page feature story on campaign themes to be published on May
12 as a supplement. The feature will cover stories from Sri Lanka
and Nicaragua reporting on large retailers such as Nike, Adidas
or Hennes & Mauritz.
Südwind-Agentur, one of the members of the Austrian Campaign
has developed a campaign-kit. The kit contains the most important
campaign information and may be booked with representatives of the
campaign who also do in-house presentations for medium size groups.
Südwind-Agentur has also developed an apparel industry workshop
to be used in schools.
We are seeing an increased level of action in schools - students
produce alternative textiles, conduct opinion surveys in or in front
of retail stores and distribute action cards.
