Company Database / Rating & Ranking
Three Austrian participants are part of the CCC company database/rating & ranking working group and participated actively in and between meetings.

Public Authorities

Ethical Procurement

Two CCK staff participated in the purchasing practices seminar in Barcelona (October 2005). A two page article with an action guide on "How to make my community a Clean Clothes-Community" in the November-newsletter will hopefully be the starting point for a successful ethical public procurement in Austria, if we manage to find time/funds for that in 2006.

New Publications and Materials

More than 1.000 people visited several panel-discussions and presentations. Next to several local and national newspaper articles, the women were interviewed by radio stations and a television team.
A representative of Tchibo attended a panel in Hamburg and a next meeting was planned for December.

Public Authorities

Ethical Procurement

We have May 2005 started a new project about ethical procurement. The essence of this project is:

  1. Information of the public about ethical public procurement and social standards.
  2. Implementation of a network with communities.
Implementation of a panel with the title "Clean workwear in the communities in North Rhein Westfalia". Stakeholders of the panel are: purchasing agents in the communities, members of the NRW-government, the minister of environment NRW, a work wear factory, NGOs and the CCC Germany. In Germany we had the trade fair "Safety and health at work". The German CCC organised a press conference about ethical procurement for workwear in North Rhein Westfalia. Members of the panel are civil servants from Bonn, Düsseldorf, IG Metall, Verdi, NGOs, a workwear company and the CCC. This press conference was the starting point for the implementation of the panel "Clean workwear in the communities in NRW". The first meeting of this panel will be in spring 2006. The result of the press conference was good (one TV-story, many articles in different newspapers)
  3. Dialogue with workwear factories in NRW.

  • Partner Activities

Visits Asia
CCC staff attended and gave a presentation at the Women's Conference on Globalization, organised by Korean Women Workers Association in Seoul. About 80 Korean and 25 international guests attended the conference, and it was a good opportunity to link up with the Asian and international women's labour groups.

In the second half of June, CCC staff visited Hong Kong, Guangdong Province, Beijing and Shanghai, to meet with old and new partners and explore options for common work.

From July 22 until 25 the ITGLWF, together with the FES, organised a workshop called FROM ATHENS TO BEIJING' - developing a trade union strategy on corporate social responsibility in the sportswear sector in Asia. The meeting took place in Hanoi, and CCC staff participated as resource persons. The workshop brought together about 25 representatives from unions in different Asian countries, who evaluated the Olympics campaign and specifically the corporate responses to it, and the opportunities this would provide for local level organising and union activities. CCC facilitated a 'national mapping exercise' by asking its research partners in Indonesia, India, Bangladesh and Thailand to do a pre-study on the sportswear industry in these respective countries, which were presented at the workshop.

Second visit Bangladesh - Spectrum case
CCC staff visited Bangladesh for the IS again from 6-14 September 2005 to update information regarding the Spectrum case. She met with CCC partners to assess in how far the demands that had been brought forward after the collapse of the factory in April have been fulfilled. She also discussed further strategies to pressurise the Bangladesh authorities and buyers to take their responsibility for compensation of the workers and improvement of working conditions.

Visits South Africa and Madagascar
CCC staff visited the workshop organised by the FES, LaRRi, SACTWU and the ITGLWF in South Africa on the future of the African garments industry, with presentations from WTO, UNCTAD, ICFTU (on WTO and NAMA negotiations) and research presentations from the different countries on the state of affairs in their respective country with the garment industry. Again it was concluded that many jobs have been lost in the industry and a resolution was adapted by all the African unions present (which can be found on the internal website).

A subsequent visit was made to Madagascar to attend and facilitate several workshops for workers delegates and for a new union for the garment sector. Meetings were held with a catholic relief organisation, with the FES and with several other unions.

Companies

Monitoring and Verification

France, Sweden and Germany roundtable
National level 'roundtable meetings', bringing together industry, unions and NGOs for discussions on how to make progress on implementing codes of conduct were organised in France (June 2nd) and Sweden (September 27th).

On 19 September the CCC, together with the IG Metal, organised a thematic workshop on Freedom of Association and collective bargaining in Frankfurt. Funded by DG Employment, the workshop brought together about 60 participants from corporations, unions, NGOs and MSIs for an in-depth discussion. A primer was developed and is now available online, the background materials for the break-out sessions are presently being reviewed.

Social audit research
The research reports have been finished and used as input for the Social audit report. The researchers havr come to Amsterdam on the 21 and 22nd of November to discuss the research results, follow up activities concerning the social audit research presentations in their countries, follow up towards the brands and general follow up regarding social audits, with the participation from the researchers, several eastern European organizations, and for a part the FWF and WRC.

Jo-in update

Public Authorities

Ethical Procurement

Public procurement research and meeting
The outcomes of the SOMO research (see below) were presented at a meeting in Spain, October 19th and 20th, organised by Albert Sales of Setem Barcelona. The first day could consisted of presenting the outcomes of the research, and the consequences for and experiences of (local) authorities. CCCs, the researched companies (for part of the programme), SOMO, FWF, representatives of (local) authorities and other campaigns and organisations working on the subject were invited. The second day was a CCC only, in which the strategical and campaign ideas taken from day one were discussed.

New Publications and Materials

New international newsletter
In July 2005, a new edition of the international CCC newsletter was published, containing amongst others articles on the Informal economy, Complaint mechanisms, Work wear campaigning and the Spectrum case. It can be downloaded from http://www.cleanclothes.org/news/newsletter19.htm. In December, the newest edition was published, with articles on the Austrian CCC, an awareness raising exhibition in Eastern Europe, an overview of the Tunisian garment industry and an analysis of purchasing practices. It can be found at http://www.cleanclothes.org/news/newsletter20.htm.

Work wear study
The SOMO research on companies that supply (local and national) governments is finalised and was presented at the Barcelona seminar (see above). We wanted to extend our knowledge about the work wear market, and expand our entry points for the CCCommunities project. The targeted companies are selected out of the input the national CCCs have provided, on the basis of their European supply coverage (two of them are FWF members). About the seven companies a profile was made, which deals with policy, codes, MSI-attendance, implementation of policy, (negative) press and what is known about the supply chain. The general conclusion is that work wear companies are lagging behind enormously when it comes to supply chain responsibility - possibly due to lack of public campaigning and pressure from communities.

Gender publication
This is currently in production (in the design phase) and is expected to be finished before the end of 2005.

Building International Solidarity: Africa Asian networking
Report on the Solidarity Workshop for African Garment workers held in Swaziland - May 2005. The workshop aimed to develop campaigning initiatives to improve working conditions in Eastern and Southern African garment factories. The workshop focused specifically on developing initiatives to address working conditions in Asian manufacturer multinationals, producing for large retailers. In cooperative solidarity, trade unions, shop stewards, and NGOs shared information and developed an action plan in order to improve working conditions in the region.

Looking for a quick fix - how social auditing is keeping workers in sweatshops
Report of social audit research: social audits as they are currently carried out often fail to deliver as a tool for checking working conditions in facilities producing garments and sports shoes. Researchers, drawing upon the input of 670 workers from 40 factories, found that social auditing falls short especially in relation to detecting violations of freedom of association, excessive and forced overtime and abusive treatment and discrimination of workers.

New: Scratch-and-win lottery ticket campaign

- At October 18th, the launch of our scratch-and-win lottery ticket campaign took place at ´Batavia stad´, a garment outlet in Lelystad. We organised the ´scratch-and-win show´ in which people could win a daily wage of a garment worker if they gave correct answers on three garment industry related questions. We gave two radio interviews, and a short film made of it.

- The material can be used in schools e.g. while scratching away the grey boxes, you'll become aware that a daily or weekly wage of a garment worker is really low. On the back of the lottery ticket more information can be found on wages and expenditures. In the accompanying leaflet the concept of living wage is explained and the price make-up of a sport shoe is portrayed.

Sweden - Rena Kläder

Public Awareness

Campaigns

Se Upp
This is the Swedish campaign for ethical public procurement. Two local groups, one in Gothenburg and one in Stockholm, are working with the campaign. Rena Kläder works very close with Rättvisemärkt (FLO-member) on this issue, to develop and plan a more comprehensive campaign that will be launched in 2006. Prior to the launch we will choose four or five "pilot communities".

Other activities and Events
Stockholms länsmuseum and Rena Kläder in co-operation
Rena Kläder has started cooperating with Stockholms länsmuseum (Stockholm County Museum). The Museum is in the production phase of an exhibition about clothes and they want one part of the exhibition to cover the working conditions in the garment industry. Rena Kläder contributes with short stories and facts about the garment industry. Another part of the exhibition is an "info square" where Rena Kläder will highlight current Urgent Appeals and distribute material. The exhibition will be launched in May 2006 and then be the in-house exhibition of the museum until 2007. After this the exhibition will make a tour to different museums in Stockholm County until 2009.

Rena Kläder Festival tour 2006
From June to August, the Rena Kläder Festival Tour attended six festivals. An exhibition with focus on urgent appeals in general and more specific on the Tae Hwa-case. At least 5000 persons visited the Rena Kläder-tent.

Rena Kläder on Gothenburg Book Fair
Together with LO-TCO Biståndsnämnd Rena Kläder had a exhibition stall at the Gothenburg Book Fair. Rena Kläder gave three workshops at the fair: one about Ethical Public Procurement and two about the educational material that are developed together with Rättvisemärkt.

Rena Kläder education
At 15-16 October 2005, Rena Kläder held it's annual activist education. 25 activists participated, the majority were members of Red Cross youth association, some came from trade unions and some were individuals. The education focused on Urgent Appeals.

Solidarity Work

Urgent Appeals

Fila Urgent Appeal
Activists from the Red Cross youth and the Swedish church had information stalls at four different Rock festivals in Sweden about the Fila case and collected signatures.
Information on the case has also been distributed through the internal e-mail list to all organisations, an external e-mail newsletter to sympathisers, press releases were distributed and several organisations in the Rena Kläder network also put articles on their websites.
This urgent appeal has generated over 500 signatures, e-mails and letters to Fila.

Companies

Monitoring and Verification

Roundtable on Freedom of association
On September 27th Rena Kläder organised a roundtable. IS, ITGLWF, ETI Norway, several members of the Rena Kläder network and six garment companies (JC, Ellos, H&M, Filippa K, Björn Borg, Lindex and Indiska) participated. The aim of the seminar was to "brake the ice" since the stakeholder dialogue in Sweden has not been too extensive the last years. Even though no concrete results evolved from the seminar the aim was fulfilled, and it was obvious that all stakeholders felt a need to build on this further.

Public Authorities

Ethical Procurement

Konsument Göteborg
The consumer department of Gothenburg arranged an education tour (four Fridays in October) on consumption and ethics for civil servants from their own department and some civil servants from the procurement unit of the city. Rena Kläder gave one lecture on the global garment industry and public procurement.

Legal Action
Rena Kläder met the lawyers that transpose the public procurement directive into Swedish law. We made our point of view clear and gave examples of what already had been done in other European countries.

New Publications and Material

Clean Clothes in School Phase 2 - New educational material
Rena Kläder has produced educational material together with Rättvisemärkt (FLO member). The package contains 10 chapters covering trade, human rights at work, food industry, garment industry and sustainable development. Every chapter is devided in a part with facts and one part with educational workshops. A reference group of high school teachers gave feedback during the production process and contributed some workshop ideas. Rena Kläder will work together with the education department of Swedish Teachers' Union to spread the material among teachers in Sweden.

We had a public debate with Han Dongfan, companies (Manor, Migros) and CCC. More than 100 people attended good media coverage. We cooperated with consumer organisation (SKS) and the Swiss Tibetian Friendship Association (GSTF).

Volunteers go to schools to tell the CCC-story
Volunteers have developed a educational module on garment and CCC for schools and colleges. Several visits in the classrooms took place.

(= parallel conference to the World Economic Forum WEF, Jan. 2006.)

Solidarity Work

Urgent appeals

Fila
We are still collecting signatures for the petition. Several groups and individual persons became active, but they do not receive answers from Fila.

Spectrum
We did a press release, but as the Swiss link is missing we didn't get much attention.

Companies

ISCOM
On Nov 1st ISCOM and the companies (Migros, Switcher) have agreed on a contract and a workplan for one year. The code and the methodology is equal to FWF.

Rating
A questionnaire was sent to all 29 (incl. Adidas, Benetton, Carrefour, Nike, Puma, Hess, H&M, Redoute, Reebok) companies again. Companies can give evidence about improvements in 2004/05 and can comment on the Swiss rating so far. Publication is planned for January 2005.

Public Authorities

Ethical Procurement

CCC Communities: Some initiatives towards communities have started in Switzerland (GATS-free communities; and GMO-free). The fair trade movement is asking local governments to buy FT-cotton. CCC is looking for possible partners to promote CCC Communities projects.

Other relevant and inspiring news

Toys:
We are using the new reports (from SwedWatch, May 2005 and China Labor Watch, Sept. 2005) on toy industries in China in December. Street action, letters to companies and letter to the Swiss government.

French speaking CCC:
Florence Gerber is leaving by the end of the year Berne Declaration. So again fewer capacities for French CCC-CH. But there is a new CCC newsletter planned for January 2006 and another CCC flyer for 2006.
