Activists two years in prison under Malaysian Internal Security Act
(ISA)
Dear all,
About a year ago we reported about the unjust detention of activists
in Malaysia, including labour activist Tian Chua, under the Internal
Security Act (ISA).
On April 10 they will have been detained for TWO YEARS, without trial.
We call upon all of you to fax or email your Malaysian embassy on this
date.
Below is a sample message and the address details of Malaysian embassies
(in most cases including emailadresses).
For more information on the ISA and the campaign, see www.suaram.org
Please send a copy of your messages to suaram@suaram.org
or fax: +603 7784 3526
Please take a moment to adapt the message below and send it to the
Malaysian embassy in your country on april 10.
Thanks for helping in the struggle to free Tian and his fellow-prisoners!
April 9th, 2003,
To
The Embassador of Malaysia
FREE TIAN CHUA and other ISA detainees
ABOLISH ISA NOW!
Honourable Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Malaysia,
I/my organisation ADD NAME call/calls upon you to urge the government
of Malaysia to abolish the Internal Security Act (ISA) and to release
all detainees that are held under this Act, specically:
Chua Tian Chang Vice President Parti Keadilan Nasional
Mohd Ezam Mohd Noor National youth Chief PKN
Haji Saari Sungip PKN activist
Hishamuddin Rais media columnist and social activist
Dr Badrul Amin Baharom PKN Youth leader
Lokman Nor Adam PKN Youth Wing
They were detained merely for exercising their rights to freedom of
opinion and expression, freedom of assembly and freedom of association,
as set out in Article 19 and 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights and article 19 and 21 of the International Covenant on Civil
and Political Rights.
On September 6 2002, the Malaysian Federal Court allowed Tian Chua's
habeas
corpus application and ruled the detention of Tian Chua under Section
73 of the ISA as unlawful and 'malafide'. However, this judgement did
not lead however to the release of Tian Chua.
I ask you to bring our urgent request for the release of all six ISA
detainees to your government and please inform me about the results.
Sincerely yours, |
